Essay 5 - 'School Children Should Not Have Long Holidays' . Do you agree?
School holiday is an event eagerly awaited by all children who hold students as the title. In Malaysia, there are many events and public holidays in a year such as Hari Raya Celebration, Chinese New Year, Deepavali and Thaipusam. Our country has many long holidays because we have a plural society such as Malay, Chinese, India and other ethnicities. The Government of Malaysia also allocated long holidays for school children twice a year. This will increase the number of holidays Malaysian students have. Personally speaking, I think long holidays for school children has its benefits but I believe it has way more on the bad side. That is why I completely agree with the statement that school children should not have long holidays as they have a few consequences.
First of all, students must be aware of the fact that they have many syllables that need to be studied and understood deeply. Students also need to finish studying all the syllabus for all subjects before the year-end examinations take place. This becomes more crucial for those who will sit on public examinations such as UPSR, PT3 and SPM. They even need to complete studying all the subjects two months earlier or even more than that. This will make a room for students to do revisions for all the subjects taken. For me, school children should not have long holidays to avoid the situation where they could not answer the question on examination due to not completely finishing studying the syllabus. If the school children are given shorter holidays, they will have more time to study the syllabus and this will not rush the teacher and the students. Due to the fact that students get to spend more time at school, they will have more opportunities to ask about unclear topics to teachers. In fact, this is beneficial for UPSR, PT3 and SPM candidates. They get to do last minute revision with teachers and ask them about the questions that need thorough explanations. As a result, school children would be more prepared before sitting for the real examinations.
Another reason why I think school children should not have long holidays is because it is such a waste of time. From my observation, most of the students did not know what to do during the school holiday. They did not get to go on a vacation or spend time with their family because their parents needed to go to work. Some teachers are not giving their students homework. The school children are also not studying or doing revision because they are not independent enough to study without teacher’s guidance. So, this will leave them with one choice which is spending time with friends. When the parents are not home, school children are quite free since most parents typically leave their children at home alone and go to work. The students would spend most of their time with friends. If their friends have good and positive traits, surely they will convince the student to study or indulge in other beneficial activities. But unfortunately the opposite happens when school students start to get along with the wrong person. The students will get influenced and involved with unhealthy activities that waste their time like watching television, playing video games, surfing the internet for too long and outing which involves a lot of money spending. The school children will end up getting used to the unhealthy activities habits that they do during the long school holiday and this would affect their free time during school days. School children prefer to spend their free time by watching television or playing video games instead of completing the homework given by the teachers or doing revision. Overall, students would waste their time of they are given long holidays frequently.
Another major reason why school children should not have long holidays is because it will disrupt the students’ discipline they have learnt during school days. For example, the school children have to wake up early to go to school which normally starts around 7.15 a.m. to 7.30 a.m. They also need to wear a complete attire of school uniform which can be considered as polite and suitable clothes. The school children have to follow the school's rules and regulations which help them to become more disciplined. In order to wake up early in the morning, students ought to sleep early with sufficient hours of sleep. As far as I am concerned, school-aged children from six to 13 years old need about nine to 11 hours of sleep while teenagers from 14 to 17 years old have to sleep for eight to ten hours. I am certain that school children nowadays do not have a sustained sleep time and sleep late even on school days. Can we imagine what time and how long they sleep during school holidays? When the school children used to wake up late during holidays, it will be tough for them to wake up early in the morning to go to school. Obviously, the school children would continually be late to school or even did not come at all. As we can see, long school holidays could disrupt the school children's routine that supposed to discipline them.
Not only that, long school holidays could give students an excuse to stay away from books, homework and tasks. In that case, they may forget what they have learnt previously at school. We must know that the human brain is like a knife. Therefore, it is important to sharpen them regularly, just as school children learn in school almost everyday. This could make sure that the knife will always be sharp. Now, when there is a long holiday, it is like a knife that is not sharpened frequently. Most of the students did not study or do revision at all during the school holiday. They would potentially forget about the existence of the homeworks and although they did remember about them, they will leave the homeworks incomplete because they forget how to do it. In short, school children always take long school holidays for granted without studying and complete the homework given.
To sum up, I would like to point out that a long school holiday is indeed very fun and exciting for school children because they finally could pause the stressful situation at school for a while and get a good rest. They could spend more time with family members, be involved in sports, music and arts and also improve their interpersonal skills by attending seminars or motivation camp. But despite all of that, I think long school holidays have way more consequences that benefit either for school children or teachers. The students will never be able to finish studying all the syllabus, develop lazy habits, become involved with unhealthy activities and even lose their discipline. As for teachers, they will be teaching the subjects rushingly and probably did not cover the topics thoroughly. Thus, for all the reasons mentioned above, I totally agree with the statement that school children should not have long holidays.
